Indulge in Wyoming Sports While You’re on Vacation

Whether you’re an avid golfer, love mountain biking or simply want to take in a college basketball game, you’ll find ample opportunities to indulge in Wyoming sports. The Cowboy State offers a variety of golf courses for all skill levels. Enjoy views of Devils Tower Monument at the Golf Club at Devils Tower or practice your putting skills at nine-hole courses like Kingham Prairie View in Cheyenne or Lusk Municipal Golf Course.

Powder Horn Golf Club near Sheridan offers the challenge of both grasslands and wetlands on one course. Rochelle Ranch Golf Course in Rawlins features amazing glimpses of wildlife, while Trail Ruts Golf Course in Guernsey is just minutes from the historic Oregon Trail. Glenn “Red” Jacoby Golf Course is located on the University of Wyoming campus in Laramie. Situated at 7220 feet above sea level, it offers 6855 yards of playing surface. Fox Run Golf Course in Laramie offers scenic views of the Wyoming landscape. Located off Hwy 230, the nine-hole course boasts blue grass fairways, bent grass greens, and excellent bird watching. Mylar Park in Cheyenne is a fun place to play disc golf. Tackle diverse terrain, water hazards, and slopes on the challenging nine-hole course. Frontier Park Tennis Club in Cheyenne offers four courts open to the public. Sign up for lessons, watch tournaments or take part in a specialty clinic from October-May.

The Greenway Multi-Use Trail in Cheyenne is a great destination for joggers who want to stay on track with fitness goals. The 39-mile trail connects parks, schools, neighborhoods, and shopping areas and it’s open to walkers, runners, and cyclists. Horseback riding is a great way to see the Wyoming countryside. Ride along the Continental Divide in Bridger Teton National Forest or sign up for an equestrian tour around Jackson Hole. Hikers will find a variety of tempting trails around Casper. Garden Creek Falls is a 2.5-mile trail that leads to a waterfall. Muddy Mountain Trail is another 2.5-mile trail that loops around Casper and provides challenges for all skill levels.

Mountain biking is a popular activity any time of year. Whether you’re seeking a challenging fitness ride or looking for a fun way to see the scenery, you’ll find miles of open highway, and lots of mountain trails just waiting for exploration. ATV and off-roading enthusiasts have hours of fun at Killpecker Sand Dunes and Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area. The Medicine Bow Recreation Trail, 45 minutes south of Laramie, is a hiking and biking trail that winds past rivers, forests and lakes. The former train track stretches 25 miles from Albany to the Colorado border.

Winter sports in Wyoming range ice climbing along the South Fork of the Shoshone River to skiing and snowboarding around Pinedale and Jackson Hole. Take the family on a fun sleigh ride, sign up for a snowmobile tour, or zip down the slopes on a tube at King Tubes Snow Tube Park. You’ll also find plenty of wide-open spaces perfect for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing.

While you’re in the area consider visiting local sports venues. After a long day of sightseeing, cool off with a dip in Johnson Pool at Cheyenne’s Lincoln Park. The 25-yard lap pool is situated near a picnic area and has a playground for children. Cheyenne Ice & Events Center is home to the Cheyenne Stampede junior hockey team. The multi-purpose venue offers ice-skating, laser tag, and also hosts sporting events. Arena Auditorium in Laramie hosts home games of the University of Wyoming Cowboys basketball team. Built at an elevation of 7220 ft., it is the highest NCAA Division I basketball court in the country. The venue has hosted numerous tournaments since it opened in 1982.

Jonah Field at War Memorial Stadium in Laramie is the outdoor football stadium for the University of Wyoming. Home to the Wyoming Cowboys of the Mountain West Conference, the stadium boasts the highest elevation of any college football stadium in the United States. The Casper Events Center and Central Wyoming Fairgrounds hold rodeos, equestrian events, and boxing matches throughout the year.
